I had Volvo do a flush recently, but I want to drain and put in a
filter. The manual says 8 quarts, but is there oil left in the torque
converter so you cant just dump in 2 gallons oil, its actualy less?

I cant find a replacement filter online, does this 5 speed auto have
one inside it? Everyone says no.

Is there a transmission drain plug on the pan for easy drains like
Toyota? I shift higher and hard when cold and sometimes slip on
takeoff. I can wait till it breaks but new oil has helped with other
cars so I want to do the only thing I know I can do or that I think
can be done, that is put in new oil again.

    5-speed, 1.9L, 2.4L, 2.5L? These all use Aisin-Warner 55-50SN
transmissions. You can check with http://www.transtarindustries.com/
They list 89010C (filter w/ rib) and 89010D (filter w/o rib). Funky
looking things, but no mention of the pan gasket. Good luck.

The actual amount of ATF you can drain from any transmission will be
less than total "overhaul" capacity. Usually if you can get 40%-50%
out you're lucky. The cheaper method is actually 3 repeated drain/
refill with a short drive in between. The "fluid exchanger" at the
dealer costs an arm and a leg to service. (I don't think anybody uses
flush machines any more, just call it that I suppose).

It uses dino Mobil 3309? Then Toyota dino Type-IV may be cheaper at ~
$3.75/qt. If you have to spend > $7/qt then might as well get the new
Mobil-1 fully syn (new formula) ATF.
