I am looking at an '89 740 that the guy says leaks a little oil into
the coolant and says that the the 16 Valve engines are notorious for
head gasket leaks. Anybody know how true that is? Isn't it likely to
    be a cracked head?

    Thanks.

The 16 valve uses the same head gasket as the 8 valve engines, and it's
no more prone to leakage than on those engines. However the 16 valve is
more prone to all kinds of leaks in other places, especially if it's
been taken apart and reassembled without adequate cleaning. I would
suggest that you pass on this one.

And although I have no specific knowledge of this car, I too would
pass on this one. Sure- it MIGHT be a head gasket, but could also be a
cracked head, warped block, casting porosity, or other horribleness.

740's are not 16 valve engines.
