850 fuel pump assmbly repair

Discussion in 'Volvo 850' started by 850frmhellatl, Sep 8, 2004.

  1. Last year I found a large puddle of gas around the passenger rear tire when
I came out from work one day. I had the car towed in to a dealership.
They replaced the in tank fuel pump assembly. Now I'm reading about a
recent recall of 850's regarding the bushings for the heat sheild on the
fuel tank which causes gas seepage(I'm not a mechanic so if I got the
verbiage wrong please correct) and I am wondering if all that was needed
was bushings. The NTSB did an investigation #EA03-008. The car was
running just fine the day of this incident so I'm wondering if anyone
thinks the "in tank fuel pump assembly" replacement at a total cost of
$576 was unnecessary as I do? Also, is the "heat shield" part of this
assembly because I cannot find a diagram anywhere on line for this product
or the gas tank either. Thank you!

    The 2 are not related.
The pending recall is for an external heat shield mounted to the
outside edge of the fuel tank.
The tank fuel pump is a complete cartrige insert type assembly
that was replaced for leaking. Not just a "fuel pump" part.
Probably the pressure side elbow that is on top of the fuel sender unit
had a crack in it and permitted fuel to escape.
