    So far, I love the 94 850 5 speed I bought......except for the wet
    spaghetti shifter in it.

Is there a more positive shifter available for this?

Maybe something wrong on your car? I find the shift on my 850 to be quite
    positive.

Any ideas what the typical wear parts are? This one only has 68k miles
on it, but it's pretty sloppy in comparison to my '95 Passat with 120K
on it ...or even my old '92 Passat with nearly 200K...they are cable
    operated shifters too.

Check on the net' for a shift kit for it. I drove a Volkswagen (newer one...
really sloppy shifters IMO, my dad has an 03 I have missed shifts on it,
never happened on his old 91... Our Volvo is auto, our last Volvo with a
stick was a 1974 240... never drove it) with a shift kit, and it made a nice
    difference.
