The glass is cracked in one of the headlights. My dealer claims that the
whole assembly must be replaced (at a ridiculous price, of course). Is that
    true? are replacement lenses available?

Yes they are. I've replaced two on our previous 93 850. You'll need an extra
pair of hands to hold the unit whilst you ping the clips back on- mine were
incredibly tight in a "I know the glass is going to break" kinda way!

Go to EuroCarParts or German and Swedish.

Thanks. Were they the single or dual bulb variety of headlight?

    Single.

We now have a 98 S70 and although its the dual bulb h/l, the clips which
hold the glass on are still present, and i would assume I can get
    replacement glass just the same.
