My mom's V40's airbag light went on. Dealer said the bag needs to be
    replaced.

Seems the bag is $800. Said Volvo doesn't make the bag, so they're not
    responsible.

It po's me that this happened right after the 5-yr warranty. I think
it's BS. I wonder if the dealer is trying to pass the buck? It could be
that the idiot light is malfunctioning, for all I know.

Anyone have any ideas of any resources to check out? Just seems too
good to be true that the air bag is broken without any activation -
    thanks.

  2. FWIW - many SRS light problems actually turn out to be seat weight sensor
problems, including objects on the passenger seat. A second opinion is
    certainly in line.

  3. I am under the impression that airbags have a fifteen year life before the
pyrotechnics need replacing. If there is a failure of a component in the SRS
system this should be covered by guarantee/warranty for the expected life of
this safety component. Contact Volvo Cars (USA) with your complaint.
Certainly follow up Mike's suggestion before you commit to bag replacement.

    All the best, Peter.

  4. Hi, thanks for all the replies.

I just talked to my mom and she told me she went to her trusted
mechanic and he told her what's up. I believe he truly is to be
trusted, so I'll let that go. However, she should have gone to the
dealership first. To her credit, she did talk with Volvo USA and they
are the ones who told her about the 5 year warranty for the airbag.
