Another Radio Query...

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by Matthew Pierce, Jan 23, 2004.

  1. The radio in my 1990 740T is broken. The fader is gone and if I turn it up
too loud the front speakers go out. I thought it might be the amp but the
car stereo guy said it was the radio. My buddy got me an accessory tray so I
can take out the EQ if I want to. I'd like a CD player. The one I have is
    only cassette.

    What do I get? Help.

I went to Best Buy and hated everything! They are all ugly. I don't want to
spend a lot of money. The car stereo guy said I should just buy a new CD
receiver, forget the EQ and that my speakers, which were installed by the
    previous owner, are good.

    Thanks,

    Matt

keep shopping - go to specialists and other stores - bring a tape and a CD
of the music you like. Play with all the buttons and knobs, make sure you
like it before you buy it.

    cheers!

    Hi,

There are two on eBay right now. Both are quite rare as they weren't
officially imported to the US or Australian market as far as I know. They're
ideal for 740 / 940 owners who wants to fit a genuine Volvo in-dash CD
player without modifying the radio tray.

This one is CT-503. It has a detachable face (looks like it even comes with
the box for it), has built in amp (either 4 x 20W or 4 x 25W), but it cannot
be connected to external amp or CD changer.

This one is CT-906. It doesn't have detachable face, but has built in 4 x
25W amp, provision to connect to external amp and a 6-Disc changer, and
push-to-mute button. I have one of these in my 740 hooked up to a Volvo 4 x
40W external amp I pulled from a 960 and an Alpine 6-Disc changer, I can
only say I am VERY happy with the setup.

  6. Hey Matthew,

Been there done that, I have 1990 765 and the radio would sound nice most of
the time and then the bass would come and go. I replace the amp, the head
unit and the cassette finally gave up and bought a Kenwood cassette stereo
with CD changer controls off eBay $50 bucks then got a Kenwood 10 disc
changer and have been happy since. I would like more bass and have wired
the wagon for a sub but haven't gotten it yet.
I have replacement speaker but have never put them in too lazy right now.
If you go aftermarket and have an amp you will have to bypass the amp to
power the speakers if you have two on the dash, two on the front doors and
two in the back. The amp powers the front door speakers and rear speakers
and the head unit powers the dash speakers.
I did the install myself and it looks very good, sounds nice and works for
me. I put the cd changer in one of the cubbies in the back and doesn't ever
    skip.
this summer I will put the sub in the back and replace the speakers.
I wish I could find a capacitor that cuts out high frequency because the
door speakers are really mid-ranges and the high frequency distorts the
    sound when played very loud.
do yourself a favor and get the Crutchfield wiring adapters to fit your
    factory connections to your radio.
Where did you get the pocket that goes underneath the stereo?
Mine was made by Metra but I don't like it still looks good but it would be
nice to get a better one.
If you want picture or additional info just email me direct.

    Good luck,
