my wifes tranny is playing games, poor changes ,firm 1st gear to 2nd thats
normal but now a indecisive gear change .Could it be a oil \ come filter
change in the auto .Its a740 t 88 246.000 klm so its hardly run in yet .Any
    opinions please?

Check the kickdown cable for binding.

  4. Spat the dummy and gave it to the local volvo guy .I dont dare try to fix it
..Think its just the solenoid after making sure the cables were free .Boy
have you seen the price of a tranny solenoid ?$80 AU second hand and $300AU
plus new for such a basic switch .I think it will end up a straight 4 speed
    box .

  5. The saga has ended, it was the solenoid .The unit consists of a outer
round groove with a rubber seal ,and an inner round groove with a seal .A
hole in each circle is drilled so that the inner hole and the outer hole can
allow oil to flow between them .The inner seal is removed .Then the solenoid
allows the gears to change freely as a four speed box .The only problem is
no button control on the overdrive .The modification is justified as the
cost and reliablility issues of the unit are excessive .We are spoilt here
in Melbourne Australia with Volvo service people who know their stuff ,and
honest tradesmen at that .IPD HAS A PLATE AND SEAL WHICH DOES THE SAME THING
    ..

Glad you got it going. Those solenoids can fail, but not often. Usually
it's the relay or wiring to them.

The bypass works fine, if I'd known you needed one, I have a spare
working solenoid you could have had for postage. We don't have any more
    automatic cars in the family.
