In dash clock is erratic - at times blank, others with the wrong time
    displayed.
Resetting it helps for an hour or so - then starts to loose time and is off
by a couple hours or so in a day.
Dealer said hasn't heard of this before - has to pull instrument cluster to
even test it. At $150+ just to get started, seems a bit steep.
Any experience, thoughts or aftermarket options?
    Thanks in advance...

  3. I would paste a good working battery powered clock over the old one. It
would cost about $2, maybe less at the dollar store.

External battery clock is the answer so far - thanks - wish I could wire it
into the lights so it was visible at night... but illumination is not worth
    $200+... thanks

Is the instrument cluster in an 850 really that hard to pull? In a 700 it's
two screws, takes about 5 minutes max to remove it, you should look into
that route before you do a half assed hack.

First, pull all the vents and the plastic covers over the screw heads at
either end of the dash cover, and under the speaker covers. Then remove
all the screws visible through the vent holes. Remove the glove box door.
Remove the glove box. Separate the connector for the passenger side
airbag. Remove the anchor screws for the air bag. Work the dash loose
starting from the glove box side being careful to support the ultra thin
section where it curves up to cover the instrument section. Keeping the
airbag end supported work the other end loose and remove the cover from
the car. Unsnap the two clips that hold the instrument cluster in place
and lift it up. Unlatch the the plugs from the cluster and lift away from
the frame. Piece o cake. Takes about 20-25 minutes with lots of practice.
BTW it's the same procedure to replace the gauge lights. Slick, huh. :-[
