diesel engine options

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by bullet proof monk, Aug 5, 2006.

  1. I own a 1985 360GLT (Aussie) and am thinking of replacing the old petrol
motor with a diesel one when the time comes. I know these things had a
diesel option in Europe but never down-under. Anybody have any suggestions?

    Thanks.

The 340 had a diesel option, but it has a totaly different drivetrain
with a loose propshaft. Most diesel was turned into noise I think, they
    were bloody slow.
Unless you're prepared to make your own bellhousing I'd say forget it.

(although there is a VERY small chance that a bellhousing of a Porsche
924 might fit so you could use a Audi diesel, as the torquetubes are
    very similar)

  3. It should be possible to shoehorn in a Peugeot/Citroen unit up to 2.2 Litres
with turbo and intercooler. As 360 is rear wheel drive and the diesel option
used a normal gearbox, it would probably be almost prohibitively
expensivecompared to the car's value. Even a VW Golf or Vauxhall (Holden)
small diesel should be an admirable solution if it is not too awkward to
engineer it into place. There are a few 360 enthusiasts on the Volvo Owners
Club website and also on the 300 Mania website.

    All the best, Peter.

The Europe diesel 340 used the then 1.6 litre renault IDI lump (later 1.7
and then 1.9 - used in 19 and Clio) and it was truly rubbish in every sense
    of the word.

However, as the 360 has a torque tube and the 340 not, you will need at the
very least a bespoke adapter plate betwixt your choosen oil burner and the
    red block bell-housing.

Its a shame you wish to do this as good tidy 360's are getting very rare
now. - I still would like to moth ball a tidy AUS GLT with PAS and a/c...

Always seemed strange to me that Volvo made some of the best engines in
the world, and then used some of the worst from third parties in their cars.
