A tip some of you may not be aware of for cleaning dirty electrical
contacts is to to take a trip to your local model railway shop and
invest in a Track Cleaning Rubber.

These are hard and very slightly abrasive rubbers used for cleaning
brass or nickel-silver railway tracks. And they are also excellent for
fixing Volvo tail-lights having use one to fix my boss's 940 estate last
    week
