I finally relented and sent the car to the shop to tackle the
electrical problems on the 93 940 wagon. In the end I am glad I did.
I didn't think I have the time nor patience, nor the ability to
    diagnose and fix them.

    1. The speedometer didn't work, and has been for the past one and a
half year. I changed the speedometer pickup in the differential and
the instrument cluster to no avail.
    2. The rear lights don't work. Only turn signal does. No brake lights
and others. There is no indication on the instrument cluster.
    3. The shift up light won't go off and the car don't go into overdrive.

Other than that it has been very good to us and I paid very little
attention to it over the years except regular fluid changes. The
Japanese I owned in the past weren't as reliable I should say.

The mechainc said the issues are somewhat related. It started with one
of the rear lights burned and melted the light assembly. I know
because I had to replace it. They fixed it in a few hours for $460 and
change. Expensive but I think it is worth it.
