Lock change 240 estate

Discussion in 'Volvo 240' started by Les &/or Claire, Jul 25, 2004.

  1. Damn! Just been burgled! We got off lightly, just lost keys and a handbag.
Looks like i'll have to change the locks on my E reg 240 Estate. I have a
spare ignition / door key but have a lockable fuel cap. I have half a tank
at the moment, enough to get it all sorted out. Where would you go for this?
This is the first time this has happened and would like to hear from anyone
    else who's gone through this.

At the moment, all valuables have been cleared out from the car and i've
removed the HT lead from the coil to the distibutor as a temporary
    imobiliser.

Any tips? I'm in Kent, UK.

  2. Les,

A couple of years ago, I too needed a replacement key for my '84 240, I had
lost the only key I had, isn't hindsight wonderful? After a bit of
stressing, a mate of mine suggested trying a volvo dealer; I duly quoted my
vin number, and produced my V5, and then tentatively tried the resultant key
that arrived some days later, lo and behold it worked! It was only softish
metal, but quite suitable for copying. I'm not sure how you can resolve the
fuel cap issue, perhaps that key can also be sourced the same way.

If the filler cap came with the car then the key can be sourced in the same way
    as for ignition/door keys.

    Cheers, Peter.

  4. Brilliant! thank you very much..... it is a Volvo fuel cap so there's hope!
I'm not sure if I want to replace all the locks. They have the keys but it's
hardly worth nicking. I'll see what the insurance says. I'm covered for loss
of keys on my contents insurance, lets hope they include car keys!
