    Hello all,

Apparently I need a new transmission on my recently purchased 850. I
just bough last December . The 850 is a non turbo and has only 51K
miles. I took it it to a Volvo mechanic who at first thought I had to
replace the S1 and S2 solenoid. After a full flash the gears do not
engage. No it is not the PNP switch. I think I really need a
transmission. I had to tow the car back to my home after the flush.

I called two transmission places who do not deal specifically with Volvo
but say can repair it. One ask $ 2400 and the other one said the cost to
be between $ 2700 to $4200, depending on the specific model of
    transmission I have.

DOES the 1996 850s non-turbo comes with different transmission model, or
is the tranny shop just trying to get my car in there and then shoot hi.

I even called the Volvo dealer saying that if I really do need a new
tranny ( and they also believe so after I explained the situation ) the
cost would be $ 4000 max.

Anyone has any suggestion for me? I would take it to a regular tranny
shop if I can save at least a thousand.

Thank you in advance for any comments.

    Tony

I would suggest that you get the vehicle to your local Volvo dealer & have
them diagnose your complaint & to see what code that are stored in the
transmission control module if the codes come up as S1 & S2 as your post
states if I remember correctly on your year the two solenoids can be
replaced the dealer will most likely charge an hour of labor to correctly
    diagnose your complaint

The official count is 343, but there was also a volunteer who lost his life
aiding in the initial rescue efforts. And I will never forget them as long
    as I live,
    nor should any American.
