odd electrical problem

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by USSEnterprise, Oct 3, 2006.

  1. Just got my 95 850 for $2500 as is. Didn't realize there were this many
problems. Main one right now is related to the charging system. When
the engined is reved high while the car is driving, the lights get
brighter, the directionals blink faster, and a sulfuric smell is
emitted from the engine compartment (battery acid? The battery has an
overflow tube). Any ideas on what this might be? The alternator,
    voltage regulator, or main computer?

Without a meter reading I can't be positive but it sounds like the
    voltage regulator is the culprit.

  3. A meter reading from what? The alternator or the battery?

These are typical symptoms of a failing battery.

At the battery posts. You should have about 14+ volts at idle and not
much more at 2500 RPM. If it surges way up at speed, the regulator is
faulty. If the initial reading is well below 14 volts, the battery is
    the likely suspect.

  6. Also check if the ground is ok.. maybe the wires are not properly connected,
then you will get "funny" electrical issues, wires that are melting, etc.

  7. And if it is the regulator, the battery is history anyway.
