Recent Tire Preferences

  1. I did a few searches here and could really find what I was looking for.
I am looking at two brands of tires, and am open to other ideas.

Each of these are below $55:

    Yokohama $55:

    http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...ue&partnum=96VR5EASX&fromCompare1=yes&place=1

    Kumho $43-45:

    http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...ue&partnum=96VR5KH11&fromCompare1=yes&place=4

I have read good things about each of these brands, and mainly I am
worried that the lower profile tire will make the ride too stiff. I
have never had low profile tires. Can anyone vouch for the lower
profile tires and if I will regret them by having a ride that bangs me
    up when I drive?

  2. Correction to the first sentence:
I did a few searches here and could NOT really find what I was looking
    for.

  3. Unless you've got a compelling reason for low-profile (and I can't think
of one), I'd suggest you don't. They will give a slightly stiffer ride
until you hit really choppy surface, when the noise and jolt will drive
you mad and wear your suspension that little bit harder. And I think
your Volvo is RWD: unless your spare is the same profile, you would risk
damaging the diff if you ever had a rear wheel puncture.

  4. Thanks Andrew. I really have no desire to do any type of performance
driving. My daily commute to work is all of about 8 blocks and
occasionally when my wife gets cabin fever from living in a small town,
we embark on the distance journey into Dallas, Texas. There I get an
hour and a half of Interstate -- yahoo!

So, I guess I want a tire that is comfortable, fun to drive, not noisy
and still offers some performance on the rare occasion I get to
actually make a turn over 15 miles per hour.

    :)

  5. ....almost forgot, the "compelling reason" was that the lower profile
tire caught my eye as being really sharp looking, and the description
lead me to believe I could have a tire than looked great and is
    comfortable.

I should know that this is not possible and anyone who can make this
happen will gain a fortune making women's shoes.

    :)

I have Kumho Ecsta tires on my 82 244 Turbo, 205/6015, and like them a
    lot.

Better than the Michelin and Yokohamas I had before.

Good characteristics all around for an all season tire, fair price,
    good wear.
