I just bought a new antenna mast for my 850 but believe me l have
failed to replace it. Problem is how to open the top of the aluminum
tubing that holds the mast. if i can open this up, then I will be able
to feed in the new mast. Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance!

I assume you have unscrewed and removed the top gland nut on the outside of
    the car?

After this you need a very small sharp screwdriver or pick to prise the
steel collar up- it has only a small lip / flange at the top of it. Once you
get it moving, it will come up quite easily.

    Remove the gland.

Using an assistant- power up the radio from inside the car, and as the
antenna mast rises up via the motor, keep pulling on it, and it should come
up along with the plastic tail attached to the base. Note the direction of
the coil as it comes up.

Feed the new coil down in the same direction as the old one. When it wont go
any further, get the assistant to power down the radio, and with luck the
motor will grab the tail . You may have to try acouple of times.

Feed the mast down with the motor, and it should retract fully. Replace the
collar, and the nut, and your work is done.
