The reverse lights on my older Volvo have gone out and i've checked the
bulbs and both are fine I also checked the wiring which is all in good
order. Any ideas on what could be wrong. I saw some posts about
resetting the neutral switch near the shifter? I wasn't sure what this
    was referring to...

    Thanks.

Can you enlighten us with the year and model of your Volvo? Some had
mechanical switches to activate the backup light circuit) on the back of the
transmission - M40/M41 and the newer ones had electrical relay switches on
    the transmission top.

    It's a 1980 240 DL.

It's the simplest circuit that it could be. Power goes from the fuse to
the neutral switch to the taillights. The neutral switch is at the base
of the shifter, and is adjustable.

Replace tt with t (twice!) and remove parentheses to email me directly.
(But I check the newsgroup more often than this email address.)

Is the car manual or automatic transmission? It makes a difference on
    where the switch is located.

Assuming this is a 240, the switch is under the shifter bezel, it also
handles the park-neutral interlock for the starter. On my mom's car the
contacts arced and burned over the years.
