My wife's 2004 S-80 T6 (she likes the option to go when needed) was
purchased new and has had all the required services by the dealer. Now
the technician just brought it home saying that the compression in one
cylinder is 80 while the other 5 are around 130. He suggested that the
problem is valve guide wear, and that the solution is a valve job. He
also said they have seen this in at least one other S-80. This car
only has 75,000 miles. Has anyone else heard of this problem?

  2. Double check with another "trusted "mechanic with out telling him why or
what cylinder.i was told by an ex tenant that her car was playing up so she
took it for a service they suggested a replacement throttle body as the
present one was no good $450.00 was the quote .It was sticking and just
needed a wipe out ..A ONE MINUTE JOB .Or of course you could spray it out
    and wipe.

The question is have you noticed any drop in power or bad running / poor
economy? If so what prompted him to do the test, its unusual to do it
    unless there is a problem.

Probably worth getting someone else to check it and pay them for the
test, it shouldn't take long, many home mechanics should be able to do
    it too.

Valve guide wear is quite rare in most cars these days, but many things
can affect it, such as driving style, fuel quality and general
servicing. It could also have been a problem in the mfr of the engine.

You could try a claim against the sale of goods act, but it would be
difficult to prove the fault or weakness was present at the time of sale
(you have 6 years to claim). Certainly mentioning the Sale of Goods act
will put the willies up the the branch that sold it to you. Volvo
already got burnt with SoGA on the the throttle body problems.
All retailers try to pretend it doesn't exist.
