My '01 s60's brake pedal is behaving strangely. The car is new to
me so I'm not sure if this is normal.

At first it emitted a high-pitched whistle, an ethereal sound
that was hard to trace back to its source. That seems to have
stopped, but now it often gives off the hissing sound of air
escaping, as if it's depressurizing. Both these sounds happen
after my foot is taken off the pedal, and last a good 20 seconds.
Mild pressure on the pedal stops the noise.

Your brake booster is bad. This is a known issue on the 01 S60s (perhaps
other models as well). I had mine replaced around 90k miles. I don't
recall what the price was for the new unit - couple hundred bucks i think.

charlie, thanks for your reply. I just found it on Google - it
hadn't come through my usenet server. I also suspect it's the
    brake booster.

I am having the exact same problem right now. I can't offer a solution
yet, but it must be somewhat common if we both have the exact same
issue. I've found that if i barely tap the brake it stops until the
next time i brake. I would wonder if it was a punctured booster
diaphragm, but it sounds like it's coming from the floor.. (I have a
'99 S80, i just got it last week!)

My server is missing a lot of messages, including Hank's. I asked
the dealer whether there was a recall for the booster, since so
many are failing, and he said no. This is not a cheap repair. The
parts and labor will run roughly $700. Volvo's got an obvious
defect, and they ought to do the repair gratis. But my high
mileage puts me out of warrantee.

No there is no recall or service action for this fault I haven't heard of
any possible recall in the near future if you are in the US you can contact
Volvo customer service & explain your case they will in turn contact your
servicing dealer & discuss with them your complaint some times you may get
some assistance from the dealer in way of the dealer covering the part & you
the customer paying the labor but it rests with the service manger to make
the final decision in your case
