Can anyone tell me when the timing belt should be changed on S80.
Well, the thing about timing belts is that if they break you just bought a new engine. I don't follow much of the dealer recommended servicing, but I change the timeling belt regularly. Kent
The S80 only needs a new timing belt every 105,000 miles. Any more than that is a waste of time and money. Just tension it correctly and you're good to go. Spanky
Mines just snapped at 67000 miles. Is there any chance I will get away with a new top end or will it be a new engine and am I totally liable. The car is currently with Volvo.
Usually the only damage is bent valves. There will be marks on the piston tops, but they can be ignored. -- Mike F. Thornhill (near Toronto), Ont. NOTE: new address!! Replace tt with t (twice!) and remove parentheses to email me directly. (But I check the newsgroup more often than this email address.)
They've told me that it could just be a sheared woodruff key somewhere and that they are going to try a new belt tomorrow.
That was probably the accessories belt (alternator, a/c compressor, etc.), not the timing belt! It's supposed to be replaced every 60,000 miles. Spanky
I should probably add that if it WAS your timing belt someone probably reset the odometer to a lower mileage. There is a lot of profit in that sort of thing. It would be extremely rare for the timing belt to break in only 67,000 miles. Spanky
My mechanic recommended that I change the "serpentine belt" at my 60,000 mi service. He said that the timing belt should be changed much later.
