Should I buy a 2001 S60 2,4t?

  1. Hi There,

I hav emy eyes set on a S60 2.4T from 2001 which have run 86000 km.

I can see a 100 good reasons to buy this car - but I'm also focused on
buying a good car which will not cost me a bloody fortune in reparation
    costs.

So what are your experience with the S60 (and expecially with the 2001)
whish have now many miles behind them? Any Input are Highly appreciated!

Also - I was out testing this car today. Really nice car, except for one
ignoring thing: When shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear I had to be very distingt
in the handling of the gear spark (Spaceball!) - It did not go into the 3rd
all by itself. In the other gears I found absolutely no problems - it was as
smooth as the velvet ;-) Also, as the engine/gearbox got warm, it became
less of a problem... But it did not disapear.

So please help - It this something to look up for, or is this just a minor
    issue with the car?

Thanks very much for any inputs!

    /Jan

    I have a 2001 2.4T with 98,000 miles on it.
I have had some minor issues with it, namely the brake booster and rod ends,
but other than that, it really hasn't been in the shop... until 2 days ago
when it snowed and I wrecked it pretty bad. I slid in the snow, hitting a
12 inch curb head on going about 20 miles per hour. Needless to say, I'll
be without a car for at least 2 weeks.

The reason I keep purchasing Volvos is probably because they have the most
comfortable seats around. And with being on the road as much as I am, its
worth it. I don't know that reliability is any better than some of the
other cars on the market - but it certainly is a great car.

  3. We have the 2001 S60 2.4T with 32,000 miles. Really no problems, my wife
and daughter drive the car and they love it.

I would suggest finding another one to try, and see if the transmission
    is any better.

  5. I've had a S60 2.0T manual for 2 yrs, it's just done 78k miles. Use it for
business mainly, but also for family at weekends and trips over to Ireland
    to see the in-laws.

My good and bad points are :-
    - Gearbox shift is very sticky and 'clunks' into each gear, the clutch is
quite light, but the sticky gearchange annoys me.
    - The central locking has gone mad and unlocks the drivers door sometimes as
soon as it locks, this is getting replaced.
    - It normally does about 28mpg which is ok, but not great, this includes a
lot of motorway and traffic jams round London
    - Poor turning circle, always need to do a 3 point turn when other cars can
    turn right in
    - Seems to use a bit of oil. After the service light came on I checked the
dipstick and had to put in 2l to get to the min mark!
+ Good acceleration on the motorway once the revs are over 3000 and the
    turbo kicks in
+ I love the 4 CD changer Dolby Pro-Logic stereo, sounds great
+ Very little road noise or wind noise, great for cruising on the motorway
    + Good design features, like...
plastic clip built into the windscreen pillar for parking tickets, saves
    glueing them onto the window
fold up divide in the boot that is great to stop shopping or laptop sliding
    around the boot
+ large washer bottle which means it dosen't run out easily
+ autodimming rear view mirror works well
+ air con is very good, auto re-circulates when it detects carbon monoxide
and is better than a 3-series I used to have

Hope this is useful. FYI I'm about to give back the 2.0T company car and buy
    a 6month old S60 D5 auto.

Don't buy one. It will make me jealous.
seriously, one of my relations has one, and everytime he parks outside my
house, he's lucky to get out alive with his keys.......
