Steering vibrates when stationary

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by Peter Bennell, Sep 12, 2006.

  1. Hello
    Volvo 940 1994 power steering.

Steering wheel and road wheels vibrate strongly when the car is stationary
or moving slowly if the steering wheel is moved from the straight ahead
    position.

The effect is much worse when the brake pedal is pressed.

Anyone got any ideas what is causing this?

    Thanks

Check the fluid reservoir; it's probably low.

  3. Power steering rack needs a thorough check for clean fluid and leaks from
the rack. it then either needs replacement (£130 exchange from G,S&F or
Eurocarparts) or resetting to original spec. The other problem could be the
    steering pump is wearing out.

    All the best, Peter.

If the steering fluid has never been flushed, then the pump or the rack
seals are probably going. But check the obvious first...see if there
is enough fluid in the reservoir.
