Tire Rumble

    This started a week ago. I get a loud rumble coming from the tires at
    highway speeds.

    Rumble increases in pitch and volume according to car speed, engine
    rpm's do not affect it.

    Not present when car is still.

    No shaking or vibration detectable.

    Does not seem to come from one particular corner of the car.

    A balancing weight may have fallen off. Or there may be damage to the sidewall of a tire,
    that could lead to a blowout.

    I had the parking brake pads come loose. It make a awful noise but only when
    moving

    could be a tire issue, but seems strange that all 4 go at the same time...

    Guess that its time to drop by Crappy Tire or Wally Mart and get a
    quick check on the tires and balancing.

    However, wouldn't losing a balance weight result in a "hammering" or
    vibration? So, probably not the tire weight but possibly sidewall
    damage somewhere.....

    Hi, do you think that it could be a wheel bearing or some other type of
    mechanical noise, rather that the tires themselves? Good luck, Brad

    How old are the tires?
    Are they all the same type?
    Were they all replaced at the same time?
    Have you checked the air prssure?
    Have you tried to change the air pressure?
    Does it affect handling in any way?
    Does it happen on all roads at the same speeds?
    Does it come from all 4 tires?
    Have you rotated the tires recently?
    Are you sure it's the tires?
    Has the tranny or driveshaft been off recently?
    Have the U-joints/CV joints been checked?
    Have the brakes been checked recently?
    Have the wheel bearings been checked?
    Has the front suspension been checked?
    Front and rear suspension bushings been inspected?
    How many miles on the shocks?
    ...get the idea?

    I use to install tires. I have seen tires that looked fine on the
    outside, but upon inspection of the inside of teh carcass there were
    large areas of delamination present. If you suspect bad tires it is in
    your best interest to persue the problem at a tire (tyre?) shop.

    Tires and brakes are serious, and if you are not sure, it is best to
    get it checked.

    Tires haven't been rotated in a while -- well before the sound started,
    but I had a slow leak in the driver-side front tire that got pretty bad
    in the last month (down to 19 pounds pressure, maybe less, before I
    could find a garage that was open and had a working airpump -- yes, I
    now check them at elast once a week) The noise started after that
    particular Sunday.

    That tire has now been replaced to match the pair on the back rims.
    Currently, I have 3 BF Goodrich tires, plus a Hercules. Yes, the
    Hercules is gone at my next service call.

    Still have the sound, but definitely get a noticeable vibration at the
    100KPH mark. Not severe but there. Over that, still noise but no
    vibration (what an excuse for speeding, not like this one ...

    Tranny/driveshaft are untouched.

    The otehr items are down for being part of the next service call --
    three weeks time when I have a day off.

    However, if anythign gets worse, its into the shop that day.

    I suggest in the interim that you swap that Hercules to the back and
    get matching tires on the front. Differently responding tires on the
    front can negatively affect handling.

    Just an update on this. I dropped by Suter's Garage in Aurora to see if
    they could take a look at it before they closed. One quick trip around
    the block (after spending ten minutes trying to get the &*^#$*^*^#$
    engine to start -- the old "sticky sensor" problem with hot starts that
    has been mentioned elsewhere) with a mechnic.

    He said that his best guess without putting the car up on a hoist (it
    was 6:10PM now) was wheel bearing first and flat spot on a tire second.

    He also said that it should be done sooner rather than later (couple
    days no problem but... don't take any long trips).

    Booking in for Friday.

    Well $400Cdn later and no more rumble!!!

    In fact, it's so quiet that I'm a bit lead-footed and have gone up to
    140K without really noticing.

    However, I was still getting passed, but I did back off and get back
    to a more reasonable 120K before the traffic started clumping up.
