FOR SALE 740 2.3GLE estate UK.
    SPARES OR REPAIR.
    DRIVE AWAY.

    1st Registered 01/10/86 D reg, Mot till July 05. 187k

Differential ran dry during my last French trip and the bearing
scored. The car is still running but a little noisy from the rear. I
don't have the time or skills to sort this myself, so I am open to
    offers.
    Buyer to collect.
Located North Shropshire, mail me for more information.

The 740 TI I am currently running had a blown diff when I got it - a
second-hand one cost £50 and a couple of weekends work to sort out (4 HRS
per weekend) - to change the bearings is easy - jack her up and secure well,
chock front wheels as the handbrake link cable has to come off, then remove
the rear diff plate. Remove both rear wheels, brake callipers, rotors and
handbrake shoes. Remove main wheel bearing attachment bolts and using slide
hammer (or similar) drive out the halfshafts - just far enough to disengage
from the diff. Remove the four bolts securing the differential bearing caps
and carefully remove the entire diff unit. To get a bearing off you will
need a bearing separator / puller - I used one from machine mart - my
re-built diff (which was far more damaged than a dry run) has so far given
my 20K plus mileage and is sill going strong with no noise, whine or
rumble - even though everyone I spoke to said "you can't re-build a diff -
    it will never work"
