    Help, I have a '99 uk V40, 2ltr manual.

There is a dreadful rumble from the box and vibration under accelleration.
The Volvo dealer states this is bearing faliure and that the 2ltr box cannot
be repaired only replaced. Is this true ?

The car has only done 35k miles.

    Many Thanks

In an earlier contribution to this discussion,

Chances are that the box was not made by Volvo - but bought-in complete from
another manufacturer (such as Peugeot?). If so, Volvo Parts Dept probably
only supply complete boxes and not parts thereof.

Try taking it to a gearbox specialist rather than to a Volvo dealer - unless
you think you can get Volvo to fix it for free if you make enough noise,
bearing in mind its low mileage.

[As a matter of interest, where is the car? You say it's a UK V40, but
you're showing a French email address].

Surely there must be some recourse against the supplying dealer or even Volvo
themselves as this gearbox would certainly seem to be unfit for the purpose it
was designed for. Under normal conditions the gearbox should last the life of
    the car.

    Cheers, Peter.

  4. If so, it is probably Renault. You can try that, very likely parts
    will fit.

I;d say so- given that earlier 40's used the Renault 1.9 TD engine- and even
the latest 1.9D is still based on the same block re hashed by renault and
volvo the 'box is probably very similar to that from a Laguna or Megane-
which both use the 1.9 diesel engine.
