What is the typical fuel mileage of a 760GLE (B280F?)

    Hi all,

I'm using around 12.5L/100km as far as fuel consumption on a 1987 Volvo 760 GLE with a
B280F. It's got high mileage, at 255K kms, so the engine is on it's way to being worked
    in ;).

Basically, for 50Litres of fuel, I get 400km range (I'm surprised the '87 Volvo doesn't
have a low fuel indicator?!? my '78 Fiat X1/9 does!). (the tank holds 60L of fuel, I'm
also running 87 octane, engine doesn't knock and knock sensor only retards engine when
trying to accelerate hard onto the highway, you can feel it adjust, total wide open
    throttle).

I assume I'm close to the expected mileage, it doesn't seem to be much better on the
highway, probably cuz I drive at 120km/h instead of 100, and I'm a little heavy with my
    right foot at times.

This is a North American version (Canadian car), all properly tuned.. What do you get..

BTW: our '96 850 doesn't have a trunk light?!? what??? I can't seem to find one, did they
not feel like putting one in? The trunk is nicely carpeted, I'd figure that for this
"type" of car, they'd at least put in a trunk light... our old Toyota Corolla had one
('86) hmm..... interesting, but otherwise, I like the 850 as well.

    Cheers

How low have you let it get on our 960 it's a little red LED on the gas
gauge that you don't really notice until it lights up (we've had it come on
once, maybe twice... but you're LOW on fuel when it finally comes on, i'm
talking into the red slash... still had 6L of tank remaining tho)

    Hi Rob,

I'm not sure if the 760 has this feature, I've had it quite low.... it should come on when
you're down to about less than 10L left. I would be surprised if it isn't there, I've had
this car since '87, can't find any reference in the manual either!!

I saw a 960 today, and noticed that it is a GOOD looking car!! It even looks better than
the 850 (I like the 850, almost more than the S70). If I can find a sweet 900 series or
S/V90 when my 760 finally bites the bullet, I'll do it.

I've read the reports on the 900 series cars, and they don't say many good things, they
also didn't say too many good things about the 760... however, this one has been quite the
opposite. I'm sure a well maintained 900 series car would make for a decent reliable
luxury car that is quite solid, I'd buy one over an Audi anyday.

Just curious what your 960 gets as far as fuel mileage? how many kms do you get from a
tank (how big is your tank, similar size 60L?) Mind you, your engine is much different,
but chassis wise, they are very similar. I have a 4spd auto.

We have the "760" style 960 of 1993... So they are basically the exact same
except probably interior (never been in the 760), and of course the engine.
The newer 960's are very nice... Yes they didn't get too much press...
Probably produced in too few numbers to get an accurate sample size, or
people found them to be problematic (which is confusing to me, because this
is the most trouble free car out family has ever had - just the way it was
    built is so impressive...)

Fuel tank is 75L on an live rear axel wagon, and 80L on the sedan (with
Independant suspension).... When both the wagon and sedan had IRS i'm not
sure if they upped the wagons fuel capacity.... Premium fuel is a must BTW.

We get 11-13L per 100kms in the city in summer and have got 8.8-9.5L per
100kms on the highway driving at ~110-140... I'm sure you could get a little
better doing 100kph using the hills to accelerate to as high a speed as your
feathering foot would allow, and then losing speed going back up and
such.... But around 9L is good, driving normally (with the cruise on tho)
    for a big car.

Engine wise the 960's engine is very nice... it's like the Turbo 4 only
smooth, modern, and with 2 more cylinders. Ours has a mere 150 someodd Kms
on it... Just barely broken in - literally... The engine feels new.

BTW I think the gas light comes on with 6-7L remaining.

Is it possible that you may be calculating fuel consumption solely on
comparing the type of car here? I found the tire size (if altered) may
make some difference between like car models. Another issue would be the
drive train ratio in differential, or tire pressure not adjusted for
max. economy? assumimg the cars in question have electronically switched
overdrives in their transmissions are they working properly? the list
may not end there but how little significance all these issues are
collectively they may represent up to 25% DIFFERENCE with another car of
same body style, engine, and year

    87 244 196,xxx klms
    88 245 243,xxx klms
becoming victoms of lower body rusting but have experienced very little
    real problems thank GOD

1991 Park Avenue, that's another story it has 211,xxx on Odometer.
exhaust costs went to $495.00 at a discount shop
Brakes causing pulsations despite replacing rotors
air assist strut cartridges completely shot dealer wants $1000.00 for
replacement parts only, labor on top
Munroe makes only replacemnts for non air style, they quote a kit to
convert them to non-air assist, but the car is designed for this type of
    suspension.
Six pack coil shot costed $140.00 labor on top.
Now the coolant drops to zero in overflo resevoir about every 500 klms
of driving and getting worse, no drips on ground, no real smell from
glycol to speak of - signs that Intake manifold has leaked in the past,
but not now, pressure in system seems okay but not properly checked yet,
    will perform this test next.
I could go on all day - but I won't just be thankful for that beloved
Volvo line up, those Swedes are good - may have some German bloodlines
mixed in with those car building engineers from years gone-by.

Wow I wouldn't want to reed all this, gonna consult with editors from
    Readers digest sometime soon

Park Avenue sucks but wife likes its power over the Volvo 244 she used
    to drive. Go figure?
