I have a 1992 960 Automatic. The Winter and the Economy buttons for the
transmission (Aisin 30-40)are always blinking alternately. What is the
    problem? Thanks.

  2. Very often the problem is the switch itself, but it can be down to poor
connections in the gear position sensor (incorporates the Neutral/Park
switch also known as start inhibitor function) or in the connections from
the Gearbox Control unit to the gearbox.

    All the best, Peter.

The best bet is the PNP switch. It is located on teh right side
(passenger side) of the transmission near the front of the tranny. It
is somewhat triangular in shape. The electrical cable goes over the
tranny and is the center connector of the three on the left side.

Try disconnecting and reconnecting the pleg - not as easy as it may
sound. Also, in an emergency, try starting the motor and stopping it
repeatedly. With the ignition off, shift through teh gears repeatedly
and rapidly a few times. It can be casued by other things, but
generally speaking, the switch probably needs to be replaced.

The switch sells for about $180 at Volvo in the US. FCP Groton has it
delivered for $100. it's not a fun job, though, and can involve
dropping the exhause system and disconnecting a tranny cooler line.
Difficult tasks when you are laying on your back on the garage floor.

You can find out what the computer is trying to tell you by reading the

Replace tt with t (twice!) and remove parentheses to email me directly.
(But I check the newsgroup more often than this email address.)
