I would also recommend pulling some things apart and having a look
before replacing the motor. Could be something simple, loose rod cap
bolts, bad bearing, something that could be replaced without pulling the
whole motor.- Hide quoted text -

One mechanic says 'wrist pins' on one cylinder.

So you mean ask them to partially dissassemble, with the used engine
waiting in case it's unrepairable?

Well I would do it myself, whether they should do it depends on the
cost/time involved. If the rest of the engine is in good shape, this is
something that could be repaired, but if a new motor is cheap, it's
probably cheaper to have the whole thing swapped. I'm curious though
because I've never seen a wrist pin fail in one of these, not that it
can't happen, I've just never seen it. Maybe an oil passage got clogged?

Thanks. Hmm. seems I'm caught between a mechanic who comments but
doesn't want to do the work, and another who may mainly want to sell
an engine. Any idea on how to unearth a local mechanic for another
opinion? These two are the main show in town for volvos. Haven't
tried the dealer. Should I? I always assumed they'd be less
interested as I didn't buy from them; bought it used.

Don't even talk to the dealer, they'll try to sell you a new car, or
give you the option of buying a new engine for somewhere around $4K plus
installation. They have no interest in working on a 20 year old car.

Got any gearhead friends you could pay in pizza & beer?
