You do realise of course that the X5 is built in the USA and exported to the
UK?

It has a roundel on it no matter where it's made. I think that little piece
of trim costs $5-10,000.

The new MKIII Range Rover has essentially an identical drivetrain to the X5
and a similar driving experience.
The policeman who was commenting on TV was probably talking about the
previous Mk11 Range Rover with the horrendous Rover V8 [sorry Dave!]. These
had all kinds of problems, the most serious of which was the block cracking
around the main bearings on some versions. They were moderately OK with
light private use but given some stick and they would fail regularly, as the
cop pointed out.
In fact even privately owned and moderately driven ones failed at low
mileage due to, I believe, the block going porous.

Just shows what happens when you sell a once decent product to Ford.

These MkII's were built long before Ford got involved. Possibly before BMW
even IIRC.

Current proper rangey is a BMW unit petrol and diesel. Disco / sport
is the Ford / Jag unit.

Nope, the current Rangey petrol engine is the Jaguar V8. Older current shape
ones had the BMW 4.4 in.

Diesels are still the BMW one at the moment though I think

were saying :
have noticed that **everything** in jolly old costs the same as here,
just in pounds, and have noticed that for over 20 years now. Is it
taxes, third party profits, other factors, all of the above??

17.5% VAT (sales tax) is included in the price you see on damn near
everything - rather than a smaller percentage which is added on later.
same ish 22,175 for the liberty 2wd,23,700 for the 4wd , which,
although I have about the same interest in Jeeps as Hummers - nill
does look at a glance to be the same vehicle.

How much is an X5 there?
They start at £36k here.

But you can *bet* that plod won't be paying *ANYTHING* near that. For a
start, the manufacturers trip over 'emselves to have plod driving their
vehicles...
Perhaps it's a better idea to purchase more utilitarian and cheaper
vehicles, and perhaps you have forgotten a long and close relationship
between our countries. I would much rather see you guys buy Jeeps
then follow our lead in other (mis)adventures.

I don't think you're alone in that sentiment...

Many rental car groups just keep the absolute basics in maintenance ,so by
sale time which is about the time they think costs are going to occur ,they
sell them off .I don't know about police cars but I figure they too would
sell off around the time things need fixing over and above basics. When I
brought my first new Taxi some years ago ,it had a label" taxi police pack
".I wont even bother to tell you how long the back shock absorbers and the
front shocks went well as did the discs .The air filter had a foam insert
which meant at @40 k the filter looked like new but the suspension needed
new ball joints ,due to a lack of grease nipples and some heater connections
which were super light failed ,with the replacements 3 times the weight and
cheap .
I am sure the motors on police cars are" fiddled" to go better by the police
garage as well as the basic car being built with higher output alternator,
battery ,lights, hard pads and better shocks.Needless to say better regular
oil changes as well .Often an oil cooler for the beefed up transmission as
well which has to work hard between McDonalds restaurants and the local
police station .Trouble is in tests it was found police cars went from a
cold motor start to flat out in a matter of seconds which shortens the life
of all the above up grades .Pigs don't fly, but they sure try .
